Avocado rootstock

Avocado rootstock is selected for ecological adaptation to soil and climatic conditions and for increasing resistance to soil-borne pathogens, particularly root rot.

The choice of rootstock depends on the race of the plant: the Mexican race is used to increase cold hardiness, while the West Indian race and its hybrids are used for cultivation in tropical conditions and in saline soils. Rootstocks are critical for ensuring resistance to "sudden death" of trees caused by root rot.

Both seed-propagated rootstocks derived from varieties with low commercial fruit value and clonal rootstocks are used in practice. The latter ensure the reliable transmission of traits for disease resistance and salt tolerance, although their mass production is hampered by the difficulty of vegetative propagation of avocado and the need for specialized biotechnological methods.
