The ICIA 4 variety belongs to the Antillean (West Indian) avocado race. It is a breeding achievement intended for use as a rootstock in agricultural research.
The plant is undergoing scientific evaluation for resistance to pathogens, in particular to Phytophthora cinnamomi, which causes root rot, and is also being tested for its response to abiotic stresses such as soil salinity and waterlogging.
