The Maluma tree has an upright growth habit with a pronounced central leader and a triangular crown shape, which allows for use in high-density plantings. The plant has moderate vigor, is resistant to cercospora spot, tolerant to anthracnose, and withstands temperatures down to -4°C.

The pear-shaped fruits weigh from 150 to 400 grams; when ripe, their skin turns a dark purple or black hue. The variety belongs to flowering type "A", is early-maturing, and ripens 4–6 weeks earlier than the standard Hass variety. The creamy yellow flesh separates easily from the skin.
