Rhododendron simsii requires maintaining constant moderate substrate moisture with the mandatory use of soft water. Due to its shallow fibrous root system, the crop is critically sensitive to both drying out and excess moisture, which causes root rot.

The root system of Rhododendron simsii consists of fine, hair-like roots located at a depth of 30–60 cm, which determines their high sensitivity to water management. The soil should be kept in a 'wrung-out damp sponge' state, as drying of the peat substrate makes subsequent rehydration difficult, while waterlogging promotes the development of rot.

Water quality is a determining factor: the presence of lime and chlorine is unacceptable, as it causes chlorosis and root damage. Soft water is required, preferably acidified to maintain a pH level in the 4.5–6.0 range. Special attention is paid to the irrigation regime during the flower bud initiation period, as any water deficit at this time leads to a decrease in flowering intensity.

Unlike many ornamental crops, the azalea requires an individual approach to irrigation when grown in open ground, as it cannot withstand moisture competition from vigorous plants. Maintenance requires combining soil irrigation with maintaining high air humidity, avoiding direct water contact with opened flowers to prevent the development of Botrytis.
