For the successful cultivation of Indian azalea, it is critical to maintain an acidic substrate reaction in the pH range of 4.5–6.0. The plant's root system is adapted to exist in symbiosis with mycorrhizal fungi, which perish when the acidity is disrupted or when poor-quality, including chlorinated, water is used.
Azalea flowering management is based on strict adherence to temperature cycles: to form flower buds, the plant requires a cool period at 5–12°C. Elevated temperatures combined with dry air during the budding phase cause mass shedding of leaves and flowers.
The plant's agrotechnics include mandatory pruning after flowering is completed, which stimulates branching and allows for the maintenance of a compact bush shape. The crop's ability to be trained into standard forms and bonsai requires regular control of shoot growth.
