Open-field zucchini cultivation

Cucurbita pepo L.

Growing zucchini in open field conditions requires adherence to temperature regimes that exclude frost, as well as correct planting density depending on moisture availability. Important agrotechnical aspects include frequent fruit harvesting to stimulate yield and strict crop rotation for disease p…

In the reference 248 varieties crop Field pumpkin, where this is mentioned in the description.

Zucchini is demanding in terms of thermal conditions: seeds germinate at soil temperatures from +8...+9°C, while optimal vegetation occurs at +18...+24°C. Seedlings are transplanted into the soil when it warms up to +14...+16°C at a depth of 10–12 cm, with the plant being extremely sensitive to frosts down to -1...-2°C.

Zucchini planting density varies from 5 to 16 thousand plants per hectare depending on irrigation availability and cultivation method; the use of bush forms allows for 70x70 cm planting patterns. To prevent the accumulation of common diseases and pests, the crop should not be returned to the same site more than once every 3–4 years.

A key feature of open-field agrotechnics is the necessity for regular harvesting of fruits at the stage of technical maturity, which is required for the continuous formation of new ovaries. One should also consider the risk of cross-pollination with other pumpkin varieties, which is significant when harvesting one's own seeds.
