Beta vulgaris Sugar Beet Group
A genetic characteristic of ploidy level that determines the productivity of sugar beet. Triploid hybrids are of greatest industrial importance, as they possess increased sugar yield and productivity due to the heterosis effect.

For sugar beet, diploid (2n = 18), tetraploid (4n = 36), and triploid (3n = 27) forms are distinguished. Diploids correspond to the natural chromosome set, tetraploids are obtained artificially, and triploids arise from crossing tetraploid and diploid plants.
Triploid hybrids are the most sought-after in production, as they combine optimal root growth with high sucrose accumulation. They are genetically unstable during reproduction, so seeds of such hybrids are produced annually according to specific crossing schemes.
Ploidy control in breeding is carried out, among other methods, by counting the number of chloroplasts in stomatal guard cells. In agronomy, the choice of a specific hybrid type is based on the genetic potential established by the variety originator through the ploidy level.
