Ploidy — Westerwold ryegrass

A cytogenetic trait defined as the presence of diploid (2n=14) or tetraploid (2n=28) forms, which significantly affects the morphology, nutritional value, and growth intensity of the crop.

For Westerwold ryegrass, two main cytotypes are distinguished: diploid with a set of 2n = 2x = 14 and tetraploid with a set of 2n = 4x = 28. To determine the ploidy level of modern varieties, flow cytometry is used, allowing for the measurement of DNA content in cells.

Tetraploid forms are characterized by larger cells, which results in increased size of vegetative organs and seed mass. The increase in cell volume facilitates the accumulation of higher levels of water-soluble carbohydrates while maintaining moderate cell wall thickness, which enhances palatability and intake of the forage by animals.

Tetraploids exhibit higher initial growth intensity and vigorous development, although they form a less dense sward compared to diploid varieties. The choice between these forms is based on agronomic objectives, where tetraploid varieties are preferred for producing high-quality forage mass.
