Phaseolus vulgaris L.

Bean lodging is a critical trait for cultivation efficiency, determining the feasibility of mechanized harvesting. Lodging resistance is assessed visually using a 5-point scale prior to harvest.

The primary method for managing lodging is selecting determinate (bush) varieties with genetically determined stem strength and controlling agronomic factors, such as seeding density and nitrogen fertilizer rates.
