Variety traits

Pea lodging

Pisum sativum L.

Lodging in peas reduces yields by up to 43% and complicates harvesting due to pods coming into contact with the soil. Resistance is provided by morphological characteristics, such as the afila (af) gene, which allows plants to cling together in the stand.

In the reference 539 varieties crop Pea, where this is mentioned in the description.

Lodging resistance in peas is assessed visually on a 5-point scale, where 4–5 points correspond to high resistance. A resistance coefficient is also used, where values close to 1.0 indicate high resistance, and values of 0.6–0.8 indicate a tendency to lodge.

Technological losses due to lodging are caused by a 4–49% reduction in leaf assimilation surface area and a decrease in photosynthetic productivity of up to 33%. To address this issue, breeding programs utilize the semi-leafless morphotype with the af gene, which ensures plant anchorage, or practice intercropping with cereal crops.
