An agrotechnical method of joining watermelon seedlings with a rootstock to obtain a cold-hardy root system resistant to Fusarium wilt and rots. Budding is not used for this crop.

Watermelon grafting is performed at the early stages of seedling development, at the cotyledon stage or upon the emergence of the first true leaves. The primary goal of the procedure is not variety propagation but the creation of a vigorous root system based on rootstocks, such as Lagenaria or Cucurbita ficifolia, which allows the plants to vegetate at lower soil temperatures.

Grafting techniques include tongue approach grafting, hole insertion grafting, cleft grafting, and approach grafting. Due to the delicate herbaceous tissues of the seedlings, special clips are used to secure the graft unions, and high humidity is maintained throughout the rehabilitation period to ensure successful tissue fusion.
