Leaf spots of oats

Avena sativa L.

A complex of fungal diseases primarily represented by leaf stripe (Pyrenophora avenae) and stagonospora blotch (Stagonospora avenae). The diseases are characterized by damage to vegetative organs and panicles, with variety resistance being quantitative rather than race-specific.

Leaf stripe, caused by the fungus Pyrenophora avenae, manifests as red-violet spots that develop a reddish-brown hue with a gray center as the infection progresses. The spots are restricted by leaf veins, resulting in a stripe-like shape. In the case of stagonospora blotch, lesions appear as reddish-brown or dull gray spots, on the surface of which punctate pycnidia form; the pathological process can also affect stems, causing them to blacken.

Unlike rust diseases, pathogens of oat leaf spots are not characterized by strict race-specific resistance. Breeding of varieties is based on quantitative resistance, determined by field trials in inoculated plots. In modern research, breeders use molecular markers linked to resistance loci, as the methods for assessing susceptibility to these two pathogens differ significantly.
