Maize leaf spots

Zea mays L.

A group of maize diseases caused by a complex of fungal and bacterial pathogens, characterized by the appearance of specific lesions on the leaf blade.

Northern corn leaf blight, caused by Helminthosporium turcicum, manifests as elongated spindle-shaped spots up to 25 cm long with a dark brown border. Southern corn leaf blight (Bipolaris maydis) forms grayish-tan elliptical spots, with race T of this pathogen showing high aggressiveness towards hybrids with cms-T cytoplasm.

In breeding for resistance to northern corn leaf blight, the dominant genes Ht1, Ht2, Ht3, and HtN play a key role. In addition to helminthosporium blights, significant damage is caused by gray leaf spot (Cercospora zeae-maydis), eyespot caused by Kabatiella zeae, and bacterial spot caused by Pseudomonas holci.
