Carrot root cracking

A physiological disorder caused by water balance disturbances and agrotechnical factors, which reduces the marketability and storability of carrot roots.

Cracking manifests as longitudinal or transverse damage to the root tissue. It occurs during sudden fluctuations in soil moisture, when the rapid growth of internal tissues outpaces the development of the skin. Risk factors also include an excess of nitrogen fertilizers, the application of fresh organic matter, and high soil bulk density, which creates mechanical resistance to growth.

In variety testing systems, this trait is assessed as an indicator of external appearance integrity. Varietal resistance is determined by comparing the percentage of defective roots in a sample under unfavorable conditions. Damage significantly reduces the shelf life of carrots by providing an entry point for rot pathogens, such as Sclerotinia and Erwinia, which makes the produce unsuitable for long-term storage.
