Daucus carota L.
A physiological disorder caused by water balance disturbances and agrotechnical factors, which reduces the marketability and storability of carrot roots.

It occurs during sudden fluctuations in soil moisture, when the rapid growth of internal tissues outpaces the development of the skin. In variety testing systems, this trait is assessed as an indicator of external appearance integrity. Varietal resistance is determined by comparing the percentage of defective roots in a sample under unfavorable conditions. Damage significantly reduces the shelf life of carrots by providing an entry point for rot pathogens, such as Sclerotinia and Erwinia, which makes the produce unsuitable for long-term storage.
