Variety traits
Rubus idaeus L.
The ability of raspberries to produce fruit on current-year canes. This trait is evaluated based on the length of the fruiting zone, ripening time, and the overall productivity of annual canes.
In the reference 186 varieties crop Red raspberry, where this is mentioned in the description.
In breeding, remontancy is assessed through a complex of indicators: the length of the fruiting zone, ripening time, and the proportion of berries that mature before frost. In varieties with high remontancy, the fruiting zone can cover more than a meter of the cane, whereas with low remontancy, the crop is formed only at the tips.
This trait allows for the use of an annual cropping system, in which the entire above-ground part of the plant is mowed down in the autumn. This simplifies cultivation practices and pest control but requires a high level of mineral nutrition and a sufficient sum of active temperatures to realize yield potential.
