The causal agent of rust is the heteroecious fungus Puccinia graminis. Unlike the common barberry, Berberis thunbergii possesses complex non-host resistance to this pathogen.

In the event of infection, aecia form on the underside of leaves as orange, powdery pustules. It is important to differentiate this disease from fungal leaf spots of other etiologies.
