A fungal disease of sugar beet caused by the autoecious pathogen Uromyces betae, which affects the plant's foliage. The disease leads to the disruption of physiological processes and a reduction in root crop productivity.

The causative agent of the disease is the specialized basidiomycete fungus Uromyces betae, which completes all stages of its development, including spermogonial, aecial, uredinial, and telial stages, on a single host plant — sugar beet. The pathogen infects the leaves, petioles, and stems of seed plants.

Symptoms manifest as small, rounded pustules ranging from 2 to 6 mm in diameter. Primary yellow-orange formations appear in late spring or early summer, and by autumn, the pustules darken to brown or black as telia are formed. The development of the fungus disrupts photosynthesis, respiration, and transpiration, which triggers premature leaf senescence and a decrease in root sugar content by 0.5–0.8%.

Specific rust resistance genes in sugar beet have not been described, and breeding efforts rely on general indices of variety tolerance. Families of resistance gene analogs have been identified in the beet genome; however, their use for identifying specific markers of resistance in commercial hybrids is not currently implemented.
