Rust on perennial ryegrass

The pathogens responsible for rust on perennial ryegrass are fungi of the Pucciniaceae family, with Puccinia coronata f. sp. lolii, which causes crown rust, recognized as the most damaging. The crop is also affected by stem rust (Puccinia graminis) and yellow stripe rust (Puccinia striiformis).

Symptoms appear as chlorotic specks that develop into raised pustules of orange, yellow, or brown color. In the case of crown rust, pustules are scattered across the leaf, whereas in yellow rust, they are arranged in linear stripes along the veins. By the end of the growing season, black teliospores may form.

Breeding for resistance to this disease in perennial ryegrass is based on quantitative traits and quantitative trait loci (QTL) analysis, unlike the use of major resistance genes characteristic of cereal crops. Phytopathological evaluation of varieties is conducted according to a resistance level scale for Puccinia coronata.
