Three types of rust are characteristic of durum wheat: stem rust (pathogen Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici), leaf or brown rust (Puccinia triticina), and yellow or stripe rust (Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici). Stem rust manifests as rusty-brown or black oval pustules on stems and leaf sheaths; leaf rust occurs primarily on leaf blades; and yellow rust is characterized by lemon-yellow pustules arranged in distinct rows along the leaf veins.

Pathogen populations on durum wheat possess genetic isolation from populations infecting bread wheat and include specific aggressive races, such as Ug99 for stem rust. Resistance to these pathogens is conferred by specific Sr, Lr, and Yr genes. Modern breeding employs gene pyramiding and the utilization of slow-rusting mechanisms, which are verified using molecular markers.
