Septoria blotch of oats
Avena sativa L.
A fungal disease of oats caused by the pathogen Parastagonospora avenae f. sp. avenaria. It is characterized by the appearance of brown spots with pycnidia on vegetative and reproductive organs, leading to tissue necrosis and lodging of plants.

The causative agent of the disease is the specialized pathogen Parastagonospora avenae f. sp. avenaria. The infection manifests as dark brown or purple oval spots, which expand into large necrotic zones with a chlorotic halo. A diagnostic feature is the formation of rows of small black pycnidia within the spots, and stem infection can lead to lodging of the crop.
Resistance of oats to Septoria blotch is a polygenic quantitative trait. No universally accepted specific resistance genes, similar to those for rust, have been identified. Breeding efforts are focused on mapping quantitative trait loci (QTL) and searching for sources of resistance among wild oat species, as most existing varieties possess only moderate field resistance.
