Prunus avium (L.) L.
The disease is caused by the Plum pox virus (PPV), which infects sweet cherries through specifically adapted strains PPV-C, PPV-CR, and Tat. Unlike plum, sweet cherry often acts as an asymptomatic carrier and shows episodic signs of infection.

The causative agent is the potyvirus Plum pox virus (PPV). The infection of sweet cherry is characterized by specialized isolates categorized into the PPV-C and PPV-CR strains, as well as the Tat strain. These viral forms are capable of causing systemic infection of the tree, despite the general tendency of sweet cherry to be less susceptible to the virus than other stone fruit crops.
Under natural conditions, sweet cherry infection occurs sporadically. External symptoms on this crop are weakly expressed or absent entirely, which is why infected trees often remain latent carriers of the virus. Generally accepted resistance genes to this pathogen in Prunus avium varieties have not yet been identified, and methodologies for evaluating varieties for this trait have not been developed.
