A viral disease of stone fruit crops caused by the Plum pox virus (PPV). It manifests as leaf mosaic patterns and fruit deformation, characterized by the formation of sunken spots and gummosis.

The causative agent of the disease is the Plum pox virus (PPV) of the genus Potyvirus, which consists of flexuous filamentous particles containing single-stranded RNA. There are about 10 strains of the virus that differ in aggressiveness and transmission rate, among which the most significant are PPV-D, PPV-M, and the recombinant strain PPV-Rec.

Symptoms on European plum (Prunus domestica) include the appearance of light green or yellow rings and arcs on leaves, which may be masked at temperatures above 25 °C. Sunken spots and bands develop on the fruit, the flesh hardens and turns a reddish-brown color, and affected areas are often filled with gum, leading to premature fruit drop and loss of flavor qualities.

In plum breeding, there are no clearly defined resistance genes; therefore, work is conducted by searching for natural sources of tolerance or using genetic engineering techniques, such as incorporating the viral coat protein gene to activate RNA interference.
