Up to 1,500 nodules form on the roots of eastern goats' rue, ensuring active conversion of atmospheric nitrogen into a form accessible to subsequent crops. The robust taproot system penetrates to a depth of 70 cm or more, effectively loosening compacted soil horizons and extracting nutrients from the subsoil.
Unlike annual green manures, eastern goats' rue is a long-lived crop capable of maintaining productivity in one location for up to 25 years. The plant possesses a high capacity for vegetative propagation through overwintering buds and root suckers, allowing for yields of up to 50–80 t/ha of biomass; however, it requires specific seed preparation and is characterized by slow development in the year of sowing.
