The powerful taproot system of white sweet clover penetrates to a depth of 1–2 meters, loosening the dense subsoil layer and improving aeration. Root exudates containing carbonic acid trigger the chemical processes of desalinization in carbonate soils, allowing the crop to thrive where other legumes cannot survive.
In symbiosis with Sinorhizobium meliloti bacteria, white sweet clover accumulates up to 150–200 kg of nitrogen per hectare. The coumarin contained in its vegetative mass provides an insecticidal effect, repelling soil pests. The crop serves as a phytosanitary precursor, reducing populations of wireworms and nematodes, and suppressing pathogens that cause root rot in cereal crops.
