Kiwifruit Vigor

Kiwifruit vigor is evaluated based on quantitative indicators of shoot development at the end of the growing season. A key indicator is the proportion of long shoots (from 100 cm), which in vigorous forms account for about one-third of the total number. High vigor is characterized by active shoot elongation throughout the season, whereas low vigor is accompanied by early cessation of growth and a predominance of short and medium shoots.

This indicator directly influences agronomic practices, requiring a differentiated approach to pruning and canopy training. Vigorous vines require more intensive summer pruning to control vegetative mass. The balance of vigor is important for the distribution of assimilates between shoot development and fruit formation, which is also regulated by rootstock selection and nitrogen nutrition management.
