Sweet cherry vigor

A biological trait determining tree dimensions and cultivation efficiency, evaluated via trunk cross-sectional area, crown volume, and height. It is a key factor in selecting planting density and canopy management strategies.

Sweet cherry vigor is assessed comprehensively based on biometric indicators: trunk cross-sectional area in square centimeters, crown volume and projection in cubic and square meters, and linear tree height. These data determine the classification into groups ranging from very low to very high vigor, which directly dictates the orchard layout patterns.

Sweet cherry is characterized by an acrotonic growth habit, manifesting as pronounced apical dominance. High-vigor trees on seedling rootstocks require significant spacing and complicate maintenance, including mechanized harvesting and spraying. Conversely, restricting vigor promotes earlier entry into commercial bearing and improves light distribution within the canopy, preventing a decline in fruit quality and flower bud initiation.
