Peach Tree Vigor

Prunus persica (L.) Batsch

A biological characteristic that determines tree architecture, planting patterns, and agrotechnical strategies. It is assessed through morphometric indicators, such as trunk cross-sectional area and shoot growth dynamics.

Peach tree vigor is assessed based on a set of morphometric parameters: trunk cross-sectional area in square centimeters, intensity of shoot growth dynamics during the growing season, and crown dimensions. This trait is closely linked to the clonal rootstocks used, such as BBA-1, Eureka 99, or 54-118, which allow for varying the degree of vegetative development from vigorous to dwarf forms.

Planting density, which can reach 2,500 trees per hectare in intensive orchards, and labor requirements for pruning depend on growth intensity. Vigorous varieties require active training to limit dimensions and ensure canopy light penetration, while low-vigor varieties facilitate earlier entry into fruit-bearing. An agronomist must keep in mind that the peach is prone to overcropping; therefore, with weak growth, mandatory thinning is required to prevent tree exhaustion.
