Peach Tree Vigor

Prunus persica (L.) Batsch

A biological characteristic that determines tree architecture, planting patterns, and agrotechnical strategies. It is assessed through morphometric indicators, such as trunk cross-sectional area and shoot growth dynamics.

This trait is closely linked to the clonal rootstocks used, such as BBA-1, Eureka 99, or 54-118, which allow for varying the degree of vegetative development from vigorous to dwarf forms.

Vigorous varieties require active training to limit dimensions and ensure canopy light penetration, while low-vigor varieties facilitate earlier entry into fruit-bearing. An agronomist must keep in mind that the peach is prone to overcropping; therefore, with weak growth, mandatory thinning is required to prevent tree exhaustion.
