Vigor of growth — willow

The growth vigor of willow determines its production potential, evaluated through linear shoot growth, their diameter, and total biomass productivity per unit area.

For willow, growth vigor is measured by the length of the annual shoot, which in fast-growing species such as Salix viminalis and Salix alba reaches 2–3.5 meters per season. Important biometric indicators also include the diameter of the rod at the base, which affects its marketability, and the yield, which for energy plantations amounts to 14–20 t/ha/year of absolutely dry mass.

High growth rates require the optimization of planting schemes, harvesting frequency, and the control of soil moisture and nutrient levels. In breeding for wickerwork, growth vigor is balanced with low taper and rod flexibility, whereas for ornamental forms, such as Salix integra, this indicator is intentionally limited for ease of maintenance.
