Willow tolerance is defined by the ability of clones to maintain biomass productivity under conditions of soil salinization, technogenic heavy metal pollution, and fluctuations in water regime.

For willow, the key indicator of salt tolerance is the ability to maintain growth rates at a soil electrical conductivity of up to 8.0 dS/m. Tolerance is assessed by comparing the annual shoot growth and biomass accumulation under stress conditions relative to control samples, as well as through physiological and biochemical analysis of proline accumulation and the Na+/K+ ion ratio in tissues.
Adaptive survival strategies of willow under technogenic pollution include changes in morphological traits, in particular, a decrease in the level of fluctuating asymmetry of the leaf blade. High tolerance to stressors allows the use of selected varieties for the phytoremediation of degraded soils and for ensuring stable biomass yields under variable moisture conditions.
