Suitability of Dahlias for Cut Flowers

Dahlias must be harvested only when the flower head is fully open, as buds and partially opened blooms do not mature in water. Due to the anatomical structure of the hollow stem, extending vase life often requires filling the stem directly with water and trimming under water, which increases the absorption area and maintains turgor.

Professional cultivar selection is based on flower structure: ball and pompon types are recognized as the most durable. Important breeding criteria include peduncle strength, which prevents drooping of the flower heads, the absence of side shoots, and stem length (from 45 to 60 cm) meeting floristry standards.

Agronomic assessment of suitability includes accounting for floriferousness, petal resistance to mechanical damage, and ethylene sensitivity, which requires specific storage conditions. In the absence of post-harvest ripening technologies, the quality of the final product depends entirely on the cultivation management of the plant during the growth period.
