Oats are characterized by high cold tolerance, which allows sowing to begin when the soil warms up to 3–4°C, although seed germination is possible as early as 2–3°C. Early sowing dates are critical for the crop, as oats have high moisture requirements throughout the growing season, and their well-developed root system allows for the efficient use of moisture reserves at the beginning of growth.
Delayed sowing leads to a decrease in field emergence and a deterioration of stand structure, with average yield losses of 0.8–1.0% for every day of delay. In case of a one-week delay, the yield shortfall can be partially compensated for by increasing the seeding rate; however, with a delay of two weeks or more, such compensation becomes ineffective.
