A genetic trait that eliminates the need for manual emasculation of maternal lines when creating heterotic sugar beet hybrids. Stable sterility allows for the production of hybrid seeds with high purity.

To identify CMS in sugar beet, molecular genetic analysis is used employing specific DNA markers, such as minisatellite loci TR1 and TR3, to determine the cytoplasm type. Under field conditions, phenotypic evaluation is conducted, including examination of the structure and coloration of anthers, as well as quantitative and qualitative analysis of pollen viability.
In breeding practice, the target indicator is 100% stable sterility of the maternal component. The presence of fertile pollen grains below the target level is considered undesirable, as it leads to self-pollination and a decrease in the quality of hybrid progeny. The application of this trait requires the use of a three-component system: a sterile line, a maintainer line, and a fertile pollinator line.
