Lilies do not possess classic CMS. In lily breeding, the term is applied to pollen-free cultivars (recessive nuclear mutations, such as the LflTDF1 gene) or to the sterility of interspecific hybrids resulting from meiotic disorders.

In lily breeding, the concept of male sterility is not used for creating hybrids via maintainer and restorer systems. Research is focused on developing pollen-free cultivars, which is important for cut flower production. This trait is caused by recessive mutations in nuclear genes, such as the LflTDF1 gene in Lilium × formolongi, which is responsible for tapetum development.
Male sterility is also observed in interspecific lily hybrids due to meiotic disorders. In this case, sterility acts as a barrier in the breeding process, which is overcome using polyploidization methods to restore fertility.
