The ability of perennial ryegrass to maintain viability and productivity when exposed to stress factors such as trampling, drought, salinity, and low temperatures.

To assess tolerance to trampling, wear simulators are used, measuring the percentage of green cover, turf quality on a 1–9 scale, and NDVI index values. Tolerance to grazing is determined through multi-year persistence trials—the ability of a cultivar to maintain population density within the sward under conditions of regular livestock grazing.

When assessing resistance to abiotic stresses, such as drought or salinity, both laboratory phytotests and field observations are used. The main indicators include root and shoot length, dry biomass, seedling vigor index, and physiological markers, including chlorophyll content and enzyme activity, such as catalase.

High tolerance of perennial ryegrass cultivars is characterized by a minimal decrease in quality, cover, or biomass relative to a standard under a specific stress impact. This trait directly affects sward longevity, the need for overseeding, aesthetic properties, and the functional purpose of the stands.
