Infestation of white cabbage by the onion thrips (Thrips tabaci), causing head deformation, the appearance of rusty spots, and warty outgrowths. The pest significantly reduces the quality and storage life of the produce by feeding on plant sap.

The primary pest is the onion thrips, which migrates to the crop from weeds. Leaf damage manifests as discolored spots, silvery streaks, and the presence of small black excrement dots. In cases of severe infestation, tissues become necrotic, and leaves deform and wither.
During the head formation period, the pest's feeding leads to the formation of rusty spots and warty outgrowths inside the head, known as edema. Such damage critically reduces the marketable quality of the vegetable and its suitability for long-term storage.
Genetic resistance to thrips is determined by the plant's physical parameters, such as the density of the wax bloom and head compactness, as well as by biochemical composition, including levels of glucobrassicins. Breeding efforts in trait mapping indicate the localization of resistance factors on chromosome 2.
