Pests

Potato Thrips

Solanum tuberosum L.

Pest insects of the order Thysanoptera that damage potatoes by sucking cell sap. They cause harm through physical damage to leaf tissues and can act as vectors for viral infections.

In the reference 3 varieties crop Potato, where this is mentioned in the description.

In potato plantings, the onion thrips and the western flower thrips are most commonly encountered. These pests feed on the sap of epidermal cells, which leads to the appearance of characteristic silvery coloration, bleached areas, and small necrotic spots on the leaves, representing the insect's excrement.

During heavy infestations, deformation and curling of the leaves, twisting of shoot tips, and general wilting of the plants are observed. Thrips damage triggers premature senescence of potatoes, which negatively affects crop productivity; however, no specific data on pest races or potato cultivar resistance genes to thrips have been identified.
