Yield of red currant

Ribes rubrum L.

The yield of red currant is a key economic trait expressed in tonnes per hectare or kilograms per bush. Productivity assessment includes evaluating berry weight, raceme length, and the number of fruits per raceme, while considering the stability of fruiting over the years.

To assess the productivity of red currant within the framework of state variety trials, the harvest from each bush in a plot is recorded. Structural components of yield include average berry weight, total raceme length, and the number of berries formed in each raceme.

Modern cultivars are capable of reaching productivity within the range of 15–25 tonnes per hectare or 3–6 kilograms per bush. At the same time, a critically important indicator is yield stability, as cultivars with high but highly variable productivity over the years are less valuable for industrial cultivation.

The yield level is closely linked to planting density and the use of intensive bush formation technologies, including cultivation on trellises using the cordon system. Agrotechnics play an important role: ensuring sufficient lighting, regular irrigation, and pruning, which prevents the aging of branches and the shrinking of berries.
