The bush is vigorous with an upright growth habit; the height of a mature plant is from 90 to 180 cm. The variety is self-fertile, but yield increases with cross-pollination. The plant is winter hardy, suitable for USDA zones 3–8, possesses disease resistance, and exhibits adaptation to heat and drought.

The berries are bright red, large, with thin skin and a sweet-and-sour taste. Fruit ripening occurs in a concentrated manner, over a short period. The variety is considered versatile and is used both for fresh consumption and for all types of industrial processing.

The variety has a number of synonyms, including London Road, London Red, Scotch, and Short-Bunched Red. It was used as a parent form in breeding other currant varieties, for example, Jonkheer van Tets.
