Herbicide Resistance in Sorghum

Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench

Herbicide resistance in sorghum is divided into the selective ability of conventional varieties to tolerate chemicals during specific growth stages and the specialized resistance of transgenic or bred lines to ALS inhibitors.

In the reference 7 varieties crop Sorghum, where this is mentioned in the description.

Specialized resistance of sorghum to ALS-inhibiting herbicides is achieved through a genetic mutation in the acetolactate synthase enzyme. Evaluation of such lines is conducted using PCR analysis to identify mutations in the ALS gene and bioassays to confirm plant survival when exposed to enzyme-blocking preparations.

Selective resistance in conventional sorghum hybrids is based on the permissible application of herbicides during strictly defined growth stages, primarily from the 2- to 6-leaf stage. Violation of protocols or the application of graminicides to conventional varieties leads to crop death or yield losses of up to 80%.

Assessment of resistance (selectivity) for commercial crops includes visual monitoring of the degree of plant suppression, manifested in stunted growth, chlorosis, and necrosis, as well as measuring the final grain or green mass yield in comparison with control plots.
