Blossom End Rot of Pepper

Capsicum annuum L.

A physiological disorder in pepper caused by a localized calcium deficiency in fruit tissues during water regime imbalances or excessive transpiration. The disease is non-infectious.

Blossom end rot manifests as water-soaked spots at the apex or on the side walls of the fruit, which eventually darken, become sunken, and develop a leathery texture. In some cases, tissue necrosis may develop internally without damaging the outer surface of the skin.

The nature of this disorder is linked to the slow movement of calcium within the plant, which occurs only with the water stream. Under conditions of drought, soil waterlogging, or extreme heat, calcium fails to reach the actively growing fruits in time. There are no specific resistance genes for this phenomenon, as it is not caused by pathogens but is determined by a physiological response to environmental stress conditions.
