Gossypium L.
A fungal disease of cotton caused by Verticillium dahliae, characterized by wilting, leaf necrosis, and occlusion of xylem vessels. The disease leads to massive defoliation, stunted plant growth, and a significant reduction in yield.
In the reference 39 varieties crop Cotton, where this is mentioned in the description.
The causative agent of the disease is the soil-borne fungus Verticillium dahliae, which persists in plant debris in the form of microsclerotia. In cotton pathology, defoliating and non-defoliating pathotypes are distinguished, as well as two main physiological races, of which race 2 is recognized as the most aggressive and widespread.
Mass infection is typically observed during the budding and flowering stages. Symptoms include interveinal chlorosis followed by leaf necrosis, browning of vascular bundles in stem cross-sections, and premature opening of underdeveloped bolls. Resistance of cotton varieties to this disease is predominantly polygenic.
