Cotton Yield

Cotton yield is characterized by the weight of seed cotton per unit area. This indicator is determined by plant density, the number of open bolls, and the weight of seed cotton per boll.

To assess yield, tonnes or centners per hectare are used. The biological potential of modern intensive varieties exceeds 60 ц/ha; however, under traditional cultivation technologies, figures typically range from 15–40 ц/ha. Low productivity below 15–20 ц/ha is usually associated with soil degradation or disruption of the irrigation regime.

Yield formation is significantly influenced by the method of sowing, plant spacing, and nitrogen supply. An excess of nitrogen can delay vegetation and hinder boll opening, which reduces the actual harvest. Breeding efforts for the crop are aimed at balancing high productivity with quality fiber characteristics.
