The primary causal agents of celery mosaic are Celery mosaic virus (CeMV), belonging to the genus Potyvirus, and Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV). The disease can also be caused by Celery latent virus, Celery yellow spot virus, Tomato spotted wilt virus, Tomato black ring virus, and Strawberry latent ringspot virus.
Symptoms of infection include early mottling and yellow spots on the leaves, which develop into pronounced mosaic patterns as the disease progresses. Characteristic signs include puckering of leaf blades, curling, stunting of plants, and significant growth retardation, during which celery forms excessive leaf rosettes and loses its marketability.
