Viral mosaics of yellow lupine

The diseases are caused by Bean yellow mosaic virus (BYMV) and Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV). They manifest as mosaic patterns, leaf deformation, and shedding of flowers and pods, leading to a sharp decrease in yield.

The primary pathogens of mosaic in yellow lupine are Bean yellow mosaic virus (BYMV) of the genus Potyvirus and Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) of the genus Cucumovirus. The infection manifests as a mosaic pattern on the leaves, leaf curling, deformation—sometimes to the point of a filiform shape—and necrosis of the parenchyma.

In cases of severe infection, shedding of individual leaflets and petiole exposure occur, creating a 'scorched' plant effect, along with massive dropping of flowers and pods. Genetic resistance has been poorly studied, although the Ncm-1 gene, which provides resistance to Cucumber mosaic virus, has been identified in yellow lupine.
