Viral Mosaic — Sweet Corn

The main disease in this group is maize dwarf mosaic, caused by the Maize dwarf mosaic potyvirus (MDMV). The disease manifests as chlorotic streaking of the leaves, plant stunting, and a significant reduction in ear productivity.

The MDMV pathogen belongs to the Potyviridae family and frequently circulates in a complex with the Sugarcane mosaic virus (SCMV). The pathogen has strains A and B, which differ in their ability to infect Sorghum halepense, which is critically important for breeding hybrids for resistance. The most vulnerable are young plants at the 3–7 leaf stage, in which symptoms begin as chlorotic spots that progress into a streaked pattern along the veins.

Genetic control of resistance is provided by both specific dominant genes and quantitative traits. The main loci include Scm1, which is responsible for resistance to SCMV, and Mv1, located on chromosome 3. For integrated protection in breeding programs, mapped gene clusters on chromosomes 3, 6, and 10 are utilized.
