Maize Dwarf Mosaic

A viral disease of maize caused by Maize dwarf mosaic virus (MDMV), manifesting as chlorotic mosaic streaking on leaves and plant stunting.

The pathogen belongs to the Potyviridae family and consists of filamentous viral particles. Depending on the ability to infect Johnsongrass and regional characteristics, major virus strains such as A and B are distinguished. In addition to MDMV, maize infection can be caused by the maize mosaic virus, which is transmitted by leafhoppers.

Primary symptoms in the form of small chlorotic spots appear on young leaves 3–4 weeks after emergence, gradually transforming into a mosaic streak or chlorotic striping. The most critical period of infection is the 3–7 leaf stage, leading to the development of stunting and the formation of underdeveloped ears.
