Germination Capacity — Red Clover

The germination capacity of red clover seeds determines the seeding rate and the density of the future stand. It is evaluated in the laboratory on the 7th day of germination, with hard seeds having an impermeable coat counted as normally germinated.

For red clover seeds, the standard method for determining germination capacity is germination on filter paper in thermostats. The germination energy is recorded on the 3rd day, and the laboratory germination capacity on the 7th day. For tetraploid varieties, it is recommended to conduct the analysis within a month after harvest. An important feature of this crop is the presence of hard seeds, which are included in the number of normally germinated seeds during laboratory analysis.

Regulatory requirements for sowing quality establish a minimum germination threshold of 80% for original and elite seeds and 75% for certified seeds.
