Variety traits
Trifolium repens L.
A morphological indicator defined as the height of leaf petioles and peduncles above the soil, used to classify variety types and assess the suitability of the crop for grazing or hay production.
In the reference 17 varieties crop White clover, where this is mentioned in the description.
In white clover, plant height is measured as the length of vertically oriented organs — petioles and peduncles, as the main stem is creeping and roots at the nodes. For evaluation, direct measurement with a ruler or indirect methods using a disk meter to predict yield are employed.
Depending on the variety type, the height varies from short-growing grazing forms that form a dense mat to large-leaved forms like Ladino, which reach 25–32 cm. According to UPOV guidelines, the trait is assessed on a scale from 1 to 9, allowing plants to be classified from very short to very tall.
Height directly determines agronomic use: short-growing types are the most resistant to trampling and are suitable for pastures, whereas tall-growing forms are preferred for mechanical mowing for green forage. In grass mixtures, this indicator also determines the ability of the clover to compete with grass components.
